Hamden's nickname is "The Land of the Sleeping Giant". The nickname comes from the famous landmark "Sleeping Giant" which is a rugged traprock mountain in Hamden that resembles a sleeping man. Sleeping Giant State Park is located in Hamden and offers several hiking trails. In May of 2018 the park was severely damaged by a tornado, which closed the park for several months. However, the park is set to reopen in summer of 2019.
Hamden is also famous for being the town where Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin resided in. The Eli Whitney Museum is located in Hamden.
