Auto Liability Insurance Coverage
Auto liability insurance covers the damage to other vehicles and injuries to other people that result from an accident caused by the insured individual.
The State of Connecticut requires all drivers to carry 25/50/25 limits, which means every driver is required to carry limits of liability in the amounts of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage on every vehicle they drive. This liability coverage protects you, the insured, if you cause either physical harm to another driver or passenger or physical damage to someone else’s automobile or property.
So why not just stick with the state minimum insurance?
If you are in an accident with only the state required minimum coverage, then you may find yourself responsible for uncovered hospital and repair bills. We always recommend that our customers have higher liability limits so they don’t find themselves in a position where they are legally liable for costs over what their insurance policy can pay. At Street Smart, we like to look at your full insurance portfolio to determine which bodily injury liability and which property damage liability limits are right for you.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
A major concern when explaining auto insurance to prospective customers is what happens if another driver causes physical harm or damage to me or my property, but they don’t have insurance? With uninsured/underinsured coverage if an uninsured/underinsured driver hits you, then you are covered.
And while it seems unfair that the insured person must pay for coverage to protect him or herself against the uninsured or underinsured person, it is simply a reality.
While it is impossible to know the exact percentage of drivers who are uninsured or underinsured, the industry has estimated that anywhere from 10% - 12% of drivers are uninsured and a much higher percentage are underinsured. At Street Smart we often recommend our customers consider conversion uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which offers even more auto insurance protection. “Full Coverage” Insurance – Collision and Comprehensive Coverage
All this insurance talk and we didn’t even talk about insuring your car yet! As an insurance agent, we are often asked by prospective insureds to quote them with “full coverage” but what does this really mean?
While “Liability Only” coverage would satisfy state requirements, it does not offer coverage for your vehicle itself. This is where “Full Coverage” comes in.
There are two categories under “Full Coverage”
- Collison Coverage
- Comprehensive Coverage
Collision coverage covers your vehicle for collision with another vehicle or object.
Comprehensive coverage covers your vehicle against perils like theft, fire and vandalism.
The state does not require drivers to have either collision or comprehensive coverage on their vehicles, although if a vehicle is leased or financed, the leasing or finance source will very likely require “Full Coverage”. For our insureds, we obviously recommend “Full Coverage” to protect assets.
There are other optional coverages that you can add to your auto insurance policy including:
- rental car
- gap or loan/lease coverage
- glass coverage
Do you have full glass coverage on your vehicle?
Full glass coverage provides the insured with repair or replacement coverage for their windshield with zero deductible. What a great benefit for drivers to have for a relatively low premium!
