Protecting Your Home and Everything In It
Your home is probably your most valuable asset along with the items that you have in it. At Street Smart, we believe that every homeowners policy deserves attention to ensure it is tailored to the specific home, contents inside that home and to the family that occupies it.
Breaking Down Your Homeowners Insurance Policy
What does your homeowners policy cover? We’ll break it down the same way your policy does:
Coverage A (Dwelling) this dollar amount reflects how much it would cost to replace your home in the event it is damaged or destroyed by certain perils including weather-related incident and fire.
Coverage B (Separate Structures) this dollar amount reflects the amount of coverage your policy offers for any separate structure on your property like a shed, fence or pool house.
Coverage C (Personal Property) this amount is the total amount of coverage you have for personal property within your home. At Street Smart we urge our customers to purchase replacement cost on their personal property, which will cover the cost to replace the items and will not deduct for depreciation.
Coverage D (Loss of Use) this is the amount the insurance company will pay for alternative living arrangements in the event you cannot live in your home due to covered damage.
Coverage E (Personal Liability) This is the amount that you are covered in the event you cause physical damage or property damage to anyone and have liability for these injuries or damage. Most homeowners policies offer limits up to $500,000 or $1 million, but if you’re not sure this is enough, ask us about adding an umbrella policy.
Coverage F (Medical Payments) This is the amount of coverage you have to pay for medical costs regardless of fault that you or someone on your property incurs.
So how do you choose these limits? Let Street Smart help guide you through this process. These are not easy decisions and we know the right questions to ask you that will help you make informed choices. We also have access to home valuation tools that will estimate the replacement cost for your home and we even have endorsements which we can add to your policy to increase your dwelling limit.
Optional Coverages and Endorsements
Basic homeowners policies offer a substantial amount of coverage, however, at Street Smart we often go beyond the basic policy to explain further endorsements which we can add to your policy to offer even more. Here are some examples:
Brand New Engagement Ring? Add a Personal Articles Floater to cover the ring if it is ever lost or stolen.
Finished Basement? Add Sewer & Drain coverage to ensure coverage for a water or sewer backup.
New Roof? Add Roof Matching Coverage to ensure your roof continues to look new in the event of damage.
If you have a specific scenario or item in mind and you’re not sure if it would be covered under your basic homeowners policy, just ask us and we will provide you with all possible coverage options available to you.

Ask us what you Should Have. Ask the experts at Street Smart what coverages you should consider adding to your insurance package
Here are a few examples of items you may not consider when purchasing Homeowners Insurance:
- In-Home Businesses or Home Daycare
- Upgrades or Additions on your Home
- Factors increasing liability like pool slide or trampoline
- Home systems like central vac or solar panels
- Flood exposure or increased risk
Actual Cash Value vs. Replacement Cost
If your couch was destroyed and you needed to replace it, would you rather get the actual cash value for it or replacement cost?
Here's the difference - actual cash value takes into consider the depreciation of the item, so if your couch is say 5 years old, it might only be worth $300. But if you have replacement cost, you would get the dollar amount it would cost you to replace the item without factoring in depreciation.
