What does an Umbrella Cover?
Many of our insureds ask us why they need additional liability protection with an umbrella if they already have liability coverage in both their auto policy and in their homeowners (or renters/condo policy). Our answer to this question is two fold:
- An Umbrella provides coverage over and above the liability coverage you currently have in your auto and home policy
- An Umbrella provides you with peace of mind that if an unforeseen incident happens that you are claimed to be liable for, you will have enough liability insurance to protect your assets
What an Umbrella Covers
Here are a few examples that will help explain where an Umbrella Policy would come into play:
Auto Liability: If you cause an auto accident and severely injure the driver and/or passengers in the car, they may sue you for damages above your auto limits for medical expenses, loss of wages and more. After the liability limits of your auto policy are exhausted, your insurance company would be able to then dig into the pockets of your Umbrella Policy to cover the expense verses digging into your own personal pocket.
Home Liability: If someone were injured on your property - a guest attending a party slipped and fell in your driveway after an ice storm and was severely injured, again, your insurance company would first apply your Homeowners insurance liability coverage, but if this wasn't enough, they could look to your Umbrella Policy for coverage.
But do I Really Need THAT Much Coverage?
Umbrella Policies start at $1 million in coverage and most companies offer up to a $5 million policy. These policies are in addition to the liability limits you currently have on your Auto Insurance and Home Insurance policies.
We often hear that this is simply "TOO MUCH" coverage, but an Umbrella Insurance Policy is a great way to offer additional protection for the unforeseen and often unimaginable event that could put you and your family in a dire financial situation.
Often, an Umbrella Policy premium is minimal in comparison to an Auto Insurance and Home Insurance Policy and can even offer discounts if packaged together.
An Umbrella Policy Extends Further than just Auto and Home
An Umbrella Policy extends to more than just your Auto Insurance Policy and Home Insurance Policy. If you own a toy or another property, you can also include these policies under your Umbrella Policy:
- Boat or Jet Ski
- Camper or Travel Trailer
- Antique or Classis Car
- Vacation or Secondary Home
- Rental Property
Ensure all of your insurance policies are included and covered under your Umbrella Policy to limit your liability exposure.
Does your Umbrella Cover Damage to Property?
Yes! An Umbrella Insurance Policy covers both Bodily Injury Liability as well as Property Damage Liability.
